Working from home may sound great, but remote work almost exclusively benefits high-earners and worsens income inequality for everyone else

• As offices close around the world due to the spread of COVID-19, some workers are lucky enough to be able to maintain their income by working remotely.
• According to a study conducted in Canada, however, only 44% of the Canadian workforce is able to work from home, most of whom are high-income earners.
• As a result, many low-income employees, such as those working in manufacturing or hospitality, are being disproportionately and negatively impacted by the pandemic.
• Not only are many of these workers now unemployed, they are also further disadvantaged by being unable to enjoy the lifestyle benefits that can accompany working from home.

The importance of remote work, also known as telecommuting, is evident during the current COVID-19 crisis. During a period of confinement and physical distancing, telecommuting has enabled some workers to carry out their usual tasks from home.

But remote work can also be a source of socioeconomic inequality for workers in many different ways. These are related to the job sector and employers, as well as to the loss of the benefits associated with remote work.
