PODGORICA, Montenegro (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to Montenegro on Friday to show support for the NATO ally, as a Ukraine-focused impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump picked up steam.
Pompeo was meeting Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic and other leaders, a day after one of his former top aides told congressional investigators in Washington about efforts to press Ukraine’s government to open a corruption probe that could have targeted former Vice President Joe Biden’s son.
At the start of his meeting with Montenegrin Prime Minister Dusko Markovic and Foreign Minister Srdjan Darmanovic, Pompeo declined to respond to a question about the actions of former special envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker.
